Our farm

In the heart of the Dolomites

Marmsolhof Kastelruth
The Marmsolerhof is a typical South Tyrolean farm with dairy cattle. It is located three kilometres from the mountain village of Castelrotto at an altitude of 1,250 meters above sea level. Lush green meadows surround the farm and no traffic disturbs the peace in the alpine mountains. From here, you will enjoy a breathtaking view of Mount Sciliar (2,563 m) and the Ortles Massif. A particularly charming atmosphere welcomes you in spring and autumn, when the tips of the mighty rock peaks are covered with snow and create a fascinating contrast to the deep blue sky. Directly from the farm Marmsolerhof you can set off to hikes on the Alpe di Siusi and to Marinzen.
Our Marmsolhof is a typical South Tyrolean farm with dairy cattle, and we produce hay milk, the most original form of milk production. We are passionate breeders of the endangered species “Grauvieh” (gray cattle). All our cows are allowed to keep their horns.

“Grauvieh” is one of the oldest cattle breeds in Europe and is kept for both its milk and its meat. The animals are very robust and resistant to diseases. They are very frugal and well suited to the living conditions in the mountains.

In the summer, they graze fresh grass from our pastures on the Alpe di Siusi; in autumn they feed on the surrounding meadows at the farm Marmsolerhof, and in winter they eat some hay and crushed grain.
The entire production cycle of the hay milk is based on sustainability and, thanks to the utilization of meadows and alpine pastures, not only ensures the biodiversity of the grass and herbs, but also the preservation of the mountain landscape.

The farm was first mentioned at the end of the 14th century and has been owned by the Rier family since 1751. Since 2012, Matthias Rier and his family run the farm, thus, the ‘Marmsolhof’ is a historical heritage farm.

Rural idyll

Marmsolhof Kastelruth

During your farm holidays in Castelrotto you will discover the quiet country life in the mountains of South Tyrol, with its several different features. Many animals live on the farm Marmsolerhof. Besides cows and calves, also cats and goats call the farm their home. Among our home-made products you’ll find milk, fruit juices and fruit spreads. You can enjoy these fresh farm products in the morning on the breakfast buffet. Outside you will find a well-kept lawn, where you can enjoy the warm sunshine to the fullest. A playground with a swing, slide, seesaw and sandpit is available for the youngest holiday guests. Your car can take a break during the holidays.

A bus stop is located not far from our farm, and in the winter, a free ski bus takes you to the lifts in Siusi allo Sciliar.

Alpine mountain experiences

Marmsolhof Kastelruth

The Alpe di Siusi is the largest high alpine plateau in Europe and is criss-crossed by an extensive network of hiking and cycling trails. Fantastic hiking itineraries in this region start right at the farm Marmsolhof. On hot summer days, you may cool off and refresh in the crystal-clear water of the Lake Fiè and in the public outdoor swimming pool in Telfen. In the winter, the green slopes turn into snow-covered ski runs. The cable car in Siusi allo Sciliar gets you quickly and comfortably to the ski area Alpe di Siusi, where you may indulge in winter skiing fun on 60 kilometers of slopes.

Our farm includes a private alpine hut, which is located on the Alpe di Siusi in Saltria.

What our guests say

Marmsolhof Kastelruth

We spent a total of three wonderful weeks with the Rier family. A week in the Marmsoler Schwaige on the Alpe di Siusi and two weeks in the “Hofsuite” holiday apartment on the Marmsoler Hof. We were received very warmly and the care during our stay was perfect. The location of the alpine hut and the farm are a dream, the view of the mountains is incredible. The farm is built as a climate house and everything is modern but traditionally furnished with pine wood, a very special atmosphere…
